Aistear week 18/1/2016

This week the children are continuing to learn about their locality. They are in role as teachers and pupils in the school in the Home Corner. They are learning about forces in the Construction Corner and making ramps to test how the strength of a push and the steepness of a slope affect how fast and how far the car goes. They also experimented with cars of different sizes and weights to see if this affected the distance they travelled. They are in role as builders at the Sand Table which has become a construction site. At the Art Table the children are making street scenes in Winter.

Aistear week 11/1/16

January’s Aistear theme is ‘My Locality’. The children are learning about the different buildings in our locality and the people who work there. In the Home Corner they are in role as Post Office workers and customers. They are developing their free writing skills by writing letters and postcards to family and friends. In the Construction Corner they are building a town and playing in it. In Small World the children are constructing buildings and places found in Shankill Village out of Lego. At the Art Table they are making maps of their journeys to school.

New Chicks

We undertook a new project at Rathmichael School. Six eggs arrived in an incubator. We watched over a few days and marked the arrival of five new chicks. This was an amazing experience for the school. To witness the new birth at such close quarters was very exciting. Each morning we watched as more hatched and each chick became stronger. We kept the chickens for two weeks marking their growth, feeding and changing them daily. This is definitely something we will repeat in the future. The education in that surpasses any books in my opinion.
