Airfield School Tour

The Junior Infants went to Airfield on the school tour that they won when they created a Christmas tree out of recycled good. They went on a minibeast hunt, had a picnic, saw cows being milked, petted and fed the farm animals and planted peas.  They had a wonderful time. Thank you to the mums who came to help!

This month’s Aistear theme is ‘My Locality’. The children have been learning about the different buildings and places in the locality and the various jobs that people do.

In the Art Corner the children have been making street scenes from coloured paper, posters to protect the local environment and junk art buildings that they have spotted in the locality. Frank O’Neill was our guest speaker this month as he is on the Tidy Towns Committee. He told us all about how we can keep our locality clean and tidy.

They have been playing as builders in ‘The Construction Site’ at the Sand Table and they also experimented with magnets.

In Small World the children have been building towns and villages from Lego and the wooden boards. They also played with the Doll’s House, designed and built a park from Lego and played with the toy garage and fire-station.

In the Home Corner the children took on different roles in ‘The Hospital’, ‘The School’, ‘The Cafe’, ‘The Post Office’ and ‘The Fire Station’. They loved learning about the different jobs that people do.

In the Construction Corner, the children built a town and a police station. They also made buildings from Polydrons and experimented with objects that could be pushed or pulled.

This month’s Aistear theme is ‘Christmas’. The children have been working as Santa’s Elves designing and making toys from junk art in the ‘Elve’s Workshop’ in the Home Corner.

In the Construction Corner the children built a sleigh and took on the roles of Santa, Mrs.Claus, the reindeer and the elves. They really loved this activity! They also built the stable and played the different parts in the Nativity story.

In Small World they constructed Santa’s sleigh from Mobilo and the children made playdough Christmas models.

The children have been doing lots of art this month. They have been busy making snow globes and snowmen from a selection of fibre and fabric. They also made Christmas tree decorations, a nativity scene and Christmas puddings from clay. The children built a Christmas tree made completely from recycled materials which was short-listed in the ‘Airfield Christmas Tree Competition’ and displayed to visitors on the farm.

This month’s story focus is ‘Stickman’ by Julia Donaldson.

November Aistear, Jnr. Infants

This month’s Aistear theme is ‘Our Families’. At the Art Table the children have made their family homes out of Junk Art and photo frames for pictures of their families. They also made maps of the family journey in the story ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’. they made pictures of what they think they will look like when they’re 100!

At the Water Table they have been bathing babies and caring for them afterwards by learning how to dry them, massage them with cream, put on nappies, feed them bottles and rock them to sleep. They have been practising washing up at the water area also. In the Home Corner they played ‘families’ and took turns at playing different roles.

During ‘Birthday Week’ the children made birthday cakes out of sand at the sand table. In the Home Corner they prepared for and threw birthday parties for different members of their ‘play family’.

In Small World, they created buildings using blocks from the different ‘colour families’. They also built their own homes from Lego and played with the Doll’s House and our wooden town set.

In the Construction Corner they drew plans of their bedrooms and got their friends to build them from the plans and they also built a variety of modes of transport in which they went on family journeys in.

This month’s stories that we focused on were ‘A Quiet Night In’, ‘Peace at Last’, ‘Owl Babies’ and ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’. These all tied in nicely with our theme.

Our guest speaker this month was Ryan’s mum Gillian. She brought in her baby Adam and spoke to us about caring for babies. Elliot brought in his chicken named ‘Ms. Fox’ and told the class about how he cares for his chickens and hens at home. We really appreciated both visits, they were very informative!

Science Experiments

Jonah Carroll’s dad Nigel is a Nano scientist and he came in and taught us about Nanoscience. He did lots of experiments with us. He froze a banana and flowers with Nitrogen. We looked at electricity and we made ice-cream. We had a fantastic time and it tied in well with our potion lab in Aistear. Big thanks to Jonah’s parents!
